Creation of antonyms in English and exercises


Vocabulary: Negative adjectives formation by adding prefixes.
As an exercise, students must think what is the contrary of the following words:


Antonyms
Balance       imbalance
Permanent    impermanet
Probable       improbable

Legal   illegal
Efficient  inefficient
Effective ineffective

Rational         irrational
Reparable    irreparable
Forgivable    unforgivable
Neccessary  unnecessary
Available       unavailable



Antonym definition: a word opposite in meaning to another (e.g. bad and good ).

  1. This type of adjectives in English are characterized by adding a prefix at the beginning of the adjective, in this case we can see from the examples that this prefixes start either with i or u:

-i
-ir
-im, in
-un,um
-il

By adding this prefixes to the root of the word we are making a negative adjective, which becomes an antonym, that is, the contrary. 
  • This differs from the formation of adjectives in English, which will be explained in another post, since the formation of adjectives comes from the use of suffixes. So it is important to have this clear and to dont confuse both terms.

Easter in England, what´s traditional?

Easter is a traditional religious time all over the world, and it is not the same in UK. There are some food´s that are typical in Easter in UK, those are the following: HOT CROSS BUNS The traditional Hot Cross Buns. They are only available at the supermarkets during Easter times even though sometimes you can find them after Easter in many supermarkets. They are usually bought rather than baked. They can be eated toasted and buttered, or simply by adding butter to them.
